Complementary and Alternative Medicine: Evidence for Integration
Integrative Medicine @ Yale/YSM Office of Education

Public interest in and use of complementary and alternative therapies is on the rise, and research into the therapeutic benefits of such therapies has been initiated in several departments at Yale.  Yet, there remain very few resources available to support or promote interest in this growing area of research and practice.

In November 2006, with the support of the Dean of Yale School of Medicine, Yale joined Harvard, UCSF, Columbia, and the other top-tiered US medical schools as the newest member of the Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine in an acknowledgement of the commitment of individuals at Yale to education, research, and clinical practice of complementary medicine.

"Integrative Medicine @ Yale" was therefore established in February 2007 by an interdisciplinary group of Yale faculty and students, in response to the growing interest among many members of the community in addressing the potential efficacy of complementary therapies, the importance of rigorous, open-minded research into these therapies, and the notion of an integrative healthcare system that combines the best evidence-based therapeutics from both allopathic and non-allopathic systems.  In addition to the nearly 40 participating clinicians, scientists, students, and other Yale faculty and affiliated practitioners, we also have over 200 physicians who have voiced an interest in the program.

Major research areas funded by the NIH/NCCAM and pursued by faculty include:

  • Stress and Mind-Body Medicine
    • Meditation
    • Hypnotherapy
  • Chinese Medicine/Acupuncture Research
  • Botanicals/Nutrition

This course was created as the first academic forum that will showcase Yale-based CAM research and integrative models of medical care, educating practitioners with credible and reliable information about CAM therapies, and providing an opportunity for community building and future research collaboration.

The success of this conference will provide a springboard for expansion of the endeavor into The Yale Center for Integrative Medicine, a university-wide Center that will be nationally recognized as a leader in generating rigorous scientific research, innovations in interdisciplinary collaboration, and breakthroughs in generating wellness and well being among both healthcare providers and patients.
