CME Conference

13th Annual Yale Glaucoma Symposium
Ophthalmology and Visual Science

Glaucoma, one of the leading causes of global blindness, affects nearly 2.5 million Americans. Early diagnosis and treatment can minimize or prevent optic nerve damage and limit glaucoma-related vision loss. It is important for practicing ophthalmologists to become updated on advances in diagnostic, medical, and surgical treatments for glaucoma to improve patient outcomes.

There are several established classes of medications that are effective in reducing intraocular pressure by improving aqueous outflow, reducing the production of aqueous, or both. In addition, clinical trials are being conducted on certain neuroprotective drugs to determine if they may help to protect the optic nerve from damage associated with glaucoma.

Surgical treatments for glaucoma include laser surgery (trabeculoplasty) and filtering surgery (trabeculectomy), as well as newer procedures that removes a targeted strip of trabecular meshwork with electrocautery and drainage implant surgery. All of these surgical techniques undergo continuous refinement, and ophthalmologists benefit from updates on these new techniques. Education on advances in glaucoma imaging, as well as updates on emerging research concerning basic science, clinical research and clinical trials of new medications is important for practicing ophthalmologists as well.

This course is designed to educate clinicians regarding innovative techniques to improve care to patients afflicted with this disease, and the specific topics were determined through a review of the topics requested by attendees at previous years’ sessions of the annual Yale Glaucoma Symposium as well as the course director's extensive knowledge of advances in the field. Yale School of Medicine and Department of Visual Sciences, as a tertiary care referral academic medical center and regional resource for education and treatment of eye diseases, is in a premier position to provide this needed education to a broad audience of practicing ophthalmologists.

Learning Objectives

Participants who attend this conference will be able to:
