CME Conference

7th Annual Yale Pediatric Update
Pediatrics

The Annual Yale Pediatric Update was started seven years ago, in direct response to requests from pediatricians throughout the region seeking high quality CME on advances in the field of pediatrics, along with education on topics of practical interest for primary care practitioners. For the past seven years, this course has been well-attended, due to the quality of the speakers and the targeted nature of the topics, determined by a rigorous needs assessment process consisting of cross-sectional surveys of the target group, and ongoing focus-group discussions with practicing pediatricians throughout the region. State licensure requirements for physician CME are taken into account when designing the course, along with American Board of Pediatrics guidelines for maintenance of certification in pediatrics.

Specific topics for this year's course were selected based on participant responses to post-course questionnaires (from previous years' courses), discussions with the senior leadership of the Connecticut chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and surveys of practitioners from throughout the state. Physicians applying for license renewal in Connecticut are required to have completed at least 50 contact hours of continuing education during the previous 24 months, including at least one hour of training or education in each of four modules: infectious diseases, risk management, sexual assault, and domestic violence.

The 7th Yale Pediatric Update will provide topics meeting the requirements for three of the four required modules. The session on child abuse will address the topics of domestic violence and sexual assault of children. The abscess management session will specifically address the role of resistant organisms in the prevalence and therapy of common skin infections, particularly Community-associated MRSA (CA-MRSA) infections. CA-MRSA can be particularly dangerous in children. Upon entering the body through a cut or scrape, MRSA can rapidly cause a widespread and serious infection. Participating in contact sports can also increase the chances of acquiring a MRSA infection. Pediatricians must be vigilant in screening seemingly minor skin problems for the presence of MRSA and treating it aggressively. Of particular note, a workshop on closed head injuries (CHI) among athletes will focus on defining the role of neuropsychiatric testing and recently disseminated CDC guidelines for return to play.

Learning Objectives
