Online Learning - learn at your leisure in home or office. Interactive CME Lectures Authored by Leading Yale Physician-Educators
STATE OF CONNECTICUT RELICENSURE REQUIREMENTS
Mandated Lectures: Yale CME is providing lectures on those topics mandated by the State of Connecticut. Beginning October 1, 2007, Public Act 05-275 requires a physician applying for license renewal to have completed at least 50 contact hours of continuing education during the previous 24 months. A "contact hour" means a minimum of 50 minutes of continuing education activity. It must (1) be in the physician's practice area; (2) reflect the physician's professional needs in order to meet the public's health care needs; and (3) include at least one contact hour of training or education in infectious diseases (e.g. AIDS, HIV), risk management, sexual assault, and domestic violence. THE GLOBAL CRISIS OF MALARIA:
LESSONS OF THE PAST AND FUTURE PROSPECTS
OMNI NEW HAVEN HOTEL AT YALE
NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT
Friday–Sunday, November 7–9, 2008
On behalf of the Yale Department of History, the History of Medicine, and the Yale School of Medicine, we are pleased to announce an upcoming Yale CME activity — “The Global Crisis of Malaria: Lessons of the Past and Future Prospects.” The Yale School of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 16 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.
Designed for physicians in Internal Medicine, Infectious Disease, and internationally to physicians in the field of Tropical Medicine, State Public Health Departments and Public Health Nurses, this conference will take a “big picture” interdisciplinary look at the background to the present global malaria crisis. It will then examine the epidemiology of the disease; the research strategies of scientists to develop new weapons (medications, genetic engineering, DDT, and a vaccine); the planning of the World Health Organization, of national programs, and of NGOs; the lessons of countries that either successfully eradicate the disease or attempted to do so and failed; and the problem of drug resistance. Yale University will host this International Symposium at the Omni New Haven Hotel on November 7-–9, 2008.
A special feature of the conference will be the gathering of international specialists from a variety of disciplines — historians of medicine, clinicians, public health officials, research scientists, public health officials, and representatives of NGOs — to contribute their insights.
Malaria is one of the foremost examples of a contemporary “reemerging disease” that causes an enormous burden of mortality, morbidity, and economic cost on some of the poorest and most vulnerable nations on the planet. As in the case of other emerging and resurgent diseases, economic, social, biological, and environmental factors suggest that the problem could well be on the point of worsening significantly, particularly in view of the synergy between malaria on the one hand and the pandemics of HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis on the other.
A variety of factors place vast populations at severe and growing risk. These factors include drug resistance, the adaptation of vectors to urban habitats, environmental degradation, population displacement and refugees, the proliferation of developmental schemes such as dam construction that create breeding opportunities for anopheline mosquitoes, lack of access to medical care, poverty, and substandard housing.
The information provided at this conference will enable participants to:
- Recognize the epidemiology of malaria
- Investigate the antimalarial strategies of the World Health Organization, or selected national governments, and of NGOs
- Measure the contemporary resurgence of malaria in comparative historical context
- Identify the leading research strategies for the development of new weapons to control the disease
- Assess the experience of selected case studies of countries that have either successfully eradicated malaria or attempted to do so
- Interpret current thinking about the medications available to treat patients suffering from malaria
- Discuss the threat of the reintroduction of malaria form countries form which it has been eradicated
